Are Nutritionists and Dietitians Covered by Insurance?

The good news is that many insurance plans now cover nutrition counseling as part of their preventative services under the Affordable Care Act. This means that both nutritionists and dietitians are often covered for services related to the management of chronic diseases, kidney disease, or general wellness goals. If you're wondering, "Are dietitians covered by my insurance?" or "Do insurance plans cover nutrition counseling?", we can help you understand your coverage.

Before your first appointment, we will verify your insurance coverage and clarify any out-of-pocket costs, such as copays or deductibles. If your insurance company covers our services, we will confirm the number of visits allowed under your plan and ensure you are well-informed about what to expect.

Preventive Care Coverage for Nutrition Counseling

Many health insurance plans offer full coverage for nutrition counseling services under their preventive care benefits, often covering visits at 100% with no limit on the number of sessions. Preventive care is designed to help individuals manage and reduce the risk of developing serious health conditions. Examples of health concerns that typically fall under preventive care include:

  • Being overweight or obese

  • Family history of heart disease

  • Family history of diabetes

  • High cholesterol or hypertension

  • & more!

If your reason for seeking nutrition counseling relates to one of these or other chronic health concerns, your sessions may be fully covered under your plan’s preventive care policy. Each health insurance provider has its own guidelines for what qualifies as preventive care, so we recommend reviewing your plan’s specific policy or contacting your insurance company directly to verify.

In-Network Insurance Providers

My Fruitful Body Nutrition accepts many major health insurance providers, including but not limited to:

  • Aetna

  • Cigna

  • Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey

  • The Empire Plan (New York State)

  • United Healthcare

Your insurance company not listed here?

Please CONTACT US and we would be happy to check on your options and insurance coverages.

If your plan is in-network, we will take care of confirming your benefits for nutrition counseling services. Whether you are working to manage a specific health condition or improving your overall wellness, we make the process simple and transparent. If you’re unsure, you can always call your insurance company to verify your coverage for nutrition counseling.

Out-of-Network Insurance and Reimbursement

If your insurance plan is out-of-network, we still make it easy for you to access care. In this case, you’ll pay for your sessions up front, but we’ll provide you with a Superbill, which you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Although out-of-network services may not cover the cost entirely, many insurance plans will still reimburse a portion of the fee. We can also assist you in understanding how many visits your plan may cover.

If a referral is required, we can work with your healthcare provider to ensure that all documentation is in place before your appointment.

What If My Insurance Doesn’t Cover Nutrition Counseling?

If your insurance company does not offer coverage for nutrition or dietitian services, or if your plan does not cover the cost of all visits, we offer several payment options. Payment is due at the time of service for any co-pays, deductibles, or services not covered by your insurance plan. We accept:

  • Cash

  • Checks

  • Credit and debit cards

Even if your insurance plans do not cover nutrition services, we are committed to making our services accessible. Reach out to us to discuss affordable payment options or explore potential reimbursement opportunities with your insurance company.
